A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness
Summary by Goodreads:
The monster showed up after midnight. As they do.
But it isn’t the monster Conor’s been expecting. He’s been expecting the one from his nightmare, the one he’s had nearly every night since his mother started her treatments, the one with the darkness and the wind and the screaming…
This monster is something different, though. Something ancient, something wild. And it wants the most dangerous thing of all from Conor.
It wants the truth.
A colleague recommended this one to me and I can honestly say that this one tugged at my heart strings. There are only few occasions that a book sucks me in and this one did. Once I started, I could not put it down. It is a beautiful written tale of a mother and a son struggling with reality that cancer is taking over her life. I connected to it at all levels – as a mother who loves my children so deeply that I would do whatever I needed to do to protect them – as a daughter who has watched my mother go through chemo and radiation fighting to stay positive and strong while she kicks cancer in the butt – as a friend who has seen one too many of my closest friends lose a parent to this awful disease. Warning… you may shed tears. I know I did.
